I will admit, when it comes to anything related to HP Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos in particular, it doesn’t take much for me to leap right in. So when Pathways released their single “Great Old Ones”, I decided to listen to it to see what it was about, and to say the least, it is definitely relevant to my interests.
The video which is peppered with the shots of the band performing showcases a man who is an unwilling pawn for one of the cults of the Old Ones. If you are unfamiliar with what that means, The Old Ones are a set of extradimensional beings, the main one that you might be familiar with is one known as Cthulhu. The idea is there are cults who worship these beings and want to bring them into our world to devour/enslave humanity. Sometimes that involves sacrifices or converting others to their cause. By the end of the video, the man finds himself marked, so I am pretty sure that means bad news either way for him.
The music matches the eldritch nature of the video, going between soft melodies to full on metalcore riffs. The song I felt was very fitting, and if you listen to the lyrics, Pathways definitely did their research in crafting this melody. I felt the song was pretty fantastic, and even if the average listener has no clue about the subject matter, they can still find enjoyment in the song.
