Gruesome Gazette

Krazy House(2024)(Review)

Do y’all remember that episode of ‘Full House’ where DJ got addicted to drugs, Stephanie got pregnant, and a bunch of criminals held them all hostage? No? Oh wait, that’s what we’re covering today.

Meet the Christian family – stars of a TV sitcom who are always up to some whacky antics before their live studio audience. Bernie is the overly religious homemaker, while his wife Eva, and their children Sarah and Adam, are always just getting into some sort of mishaps. So one random day, Bernie accidentally destroys the sink in the kitchen. They hire a team of renovators to come and repair their plumbing issues, which only becomes the start of a series of neverending problems. Not only does Eva resent Bernie and begin to act out against him, but Adam is a home-grown scientist who develops a taste for crystal meth, and Sarah really wants to fall in love – or lust, whichever comes first. And to make matters worse, the renovators they hired are actually Russian criminals who are here on a very specific mission.

Now, if this all sounds nutty to you, that’s simply because it is. The cast is rather impressive starring Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) as Bernie, Alicia Silverstone (Clueless, Batman & Robin) as Eva, and everything that surrounds them just goes balls to the walls. We have consistent blasphemous imagery, hard gore, xenophobia, slapstick comedy, and so much more that I won’t touch on due to spoiler territory.

All I can really tell you is that this film is really something. It plays out almost like a home invasion film, mixed with a strong sense of faith and doubt, and a strange 90’s era sitcom all at once. Nothing is off limits and nothing is really held back.

However, it’s a tough cookie to swallow. I’m still not entirely sure if I liked it or not. It had some really good ideas and really went for it (whatever ‘it’ is here), but sort of feels like someone wrote half the film then either ran out of gas, or someone else picked up to finish it. It’s sporadic and a bit meandering, but I still thought it was relatively interesting.

In the end, I don’t know who I’d actually recommend this film to. But if you had any sort of interest at all in anything I mentioned above, I’d say go ahead and check it out for yourself.

No rating – I’m still unsure how to scale this one.
