Dario Argento is considered one of the great Italian horror directors. His films are big on mystery, suspense, over the top violence and set pieces, and hypnotizing colors. And while the director has many popular pieces, “Tenebrae” is arguably one of his best.
A horror fiction writer has released a new book called Tenebrae, and now someone is recreating the deaths in his writings in real life. It’s a giallo mystery thriller that has sharp turns around every corner, along with some beautiful, high concept murders.
The settings, music, and direction us beautiful. Its a film where even the ugly violence shines as a Technicolor marvel. Eggshell white walls are sprayed with blood, glass shatters that you don’t see on camera, and so many cool tricks that make you question what you’re looking at. And an ending I didn’t see coming, it’s a whole lot of fun.
As far as giallos are concerned, this is one of the best. Don’t sleep on this one, it’s almost a perfect film.
“Tenebrae” is currently streaming on Shudder.
