If you tuned into the re-inaugural episode of our re-newed podcast, you’ll know Anthony and I have both been diving into Found Footage rabbit holes. When done right there’s just something magical about the experience you get through this format. So after a friend of mine continued to suggest that I check out today’s feature, I finally got a brand new DVD version to check out – and boy did it deliver.
Told in a mockumentary style, ‘Long Pigs’ tells the story of serial murderer & cannibal Anthony McAllister. A man of peculiar taste who has a very formulated method to his madness. Two filmmakers are allowed to spend time with him, filming a style that tells a day in his life over the course of several months. While in his company we are subjected to murder, vivisections, gourmet cannibalism, and everyday regular stuff. The film has a bit of a comedic lens to it, but not in a distracting way, it only makes it feel more natural. He’s a complicated person who plans his victims meticulously and has rules he abides by – even if those rules do not reflect typical morals.
As time develops and we witness more and more quirks, as well as some sad things going on in his life, we get a very detailed portrait of this murderer. This of course goes out of control when the filmmakers really start to dig into one of Anthony’s stories about a young girl he abducted, and how the father is still looking for her.
This movie plays like a combination of ‘Man Bites Dog’ and ‘August Underground’. The SOV-Found Footage really has the grain to make it feel like a series of home movies, but with the nuance to operate as an actual documentary of sorts. It’s rather fun and quite light for how horrific the content is. And while we do get some solid on-screen violence, as well the details and preparation that go into the butchery side of things, this isn’t a hard watch at all. It has a good pace and enough characterization going on to keep your focus while we divert into normality and simultaneous carnage.
