Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead(2011)(Review)

Alright guys, in order to do this review I’m gonna need everybody to be really cool for a few minutes. And I urge you to watch the trailer here so the context fits a bit better… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJImnJ-GD_I

Japan has always made horror movies that have gone into the absurd and surreal territory almost more than any other nation has. However, today’s story is honestly one of the weirdest, strangest, most bizarre offerings I’ve come across in a long while. I’m going to avoid spoilers (because believe it or not, this movie goes into places you will not see coming), and be as calm and collected as I can. It’s a horror-comedy with an extremely fitting title…

‘Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead’ tells the story of a group of high school friends on a trip. Although, it’s more like two friends who have each invited a plus one – there’s the driver Take, (whose a drug addict and dating one of the friends named Aya), the two friends – Aya & Maki, Maki is a wannabe-model and Aya is the most normal of the group. Then there’s Aya’s friend Megumi, whose a girl that’s the epitome of cool but with a heart-wrenching back story (which, when they reveal it… I was at a loss for words). And then there’s Naoi, whose Megumi’s friend and basically the nerd/loser of the group.

So, as I was saying, they are on a trip someplace and make a pit stop at a river in the woods. Maki decides this is the best time to go fishing because the trout are known for having major parasites that supermodels eat to lose weight. Lo and behold, we catch one and rip it open to find it has massive tapeworms inside it. So Maki – against everyone’s wishes – eats the tapeworm; moments before they all realize their van has been stolen and they are stranded. They walk to a nearby village to use a phone and find it is abandoned. This is when the worm that Maki eats has now given her intense gas and she has to use the bathroom. Then while using the toilet, zombies begin emerging out of it.

Are you still with me? Okay, because it’s not even close to over.

What follows is a typical zombie attack film for a bit, except the zombies fling poo, bleed poo-juice, have exploding eyeballs, and are perverts who do everything they can to strip the females clothes. And things keep escalating once we meet the village doctor who explains what’s going on.

The final 30 minutes of this film legitimately blew my mind. I read subtitles and saw images I never had on my bingo card. I uncontrollably laughed and stared in silence for long stretches of time. The twists and turns are rapid and the climax is one of the most Japanese things I’ve ever seen.

All this being said, this film is one I’d suggest you watch with friends when you’re all drinking and having a pizza. Watching this film by yourself is weirdly dirty.. which sounds obvious, but seriously. It essentially feels like an executive producer in Japan watched Lucio Fulci’s ‘Zombi’ and said “you know what this needs? Softcore scat-pr0n.” All of the females, including the zombies, are sexualized for comedic reasons, and all of the men are either perverted or dorks. There’s more farts in the soundtrack than there are screams, there’s more poo-juice than there is blood, and there’s more anime-inspired logic than there is reality logic.

So, enjoy at your own risk. But if you’re someone whose seen everything, then I promise this will happily meet you at your level, shake your hand and exchange tapeworms with you.
