Before he gave us the latest horror starring a lovable pooch, Larry Fessenden produced quite a catalog, some of them knockouts, some of them stinkers. One of his earlier entries Wendigo(2001) is a rather dull affair.
The story sees a family who take a winter vacation, and while they are on their way, they accidently run into a deer. This draws the ire of some local hunters as well as an ancient spirit that stalks them.
When they ran into the deer, things get escalated quickly, and at first it seems like a slow burn to wait for anything scary to actually happen. You remember the annoying brother from Malcolm in the Middle? He’s in here all wide eyed as he sees visions and gets the lore dump about the Wendigo. He’s less annoying here but not by much.
Other than that, nothing of note really happens. You are watching the family be a family. One of the hunters is keeping an eye on them as well. Then the father gets mysterious injured and he disappears a bit. Then the Wendigo finally shows its face. The ending was kind of heart wrenching but then that’s it, the movie is over.
In all, this was a pretty dull folk horror, and easy to see why it’s not well known. It’s something you wont even remember much. I would hate to use the term snoozefest but that is exactly what it was. But if you are tempted to watch it anyway, it is currently streaming on Tubi.
Till next time, stay scared!
