Death never really backs away, he bides his time.. waiting in the shadows for an opportunity to strike and claim what’s rightfully his. So after remaining dormant for over a decade, it only made sense that he would return with a bang.
‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’ is the official 6th entry in the Final Destination franchise, in which we witness someone having an intense premonition that results in multiple fatalities – and then they swerve the course, saving people in the progress but only for the time being. Because Death ultimately can’t be avoided forever. However, this new film serves as both a grand rebirth for the franchise as well as a new breath in an arguably tired format.
Mild spoilers for the story-plot lie ahead.
This film is extremely energetic, rightfully suspenseful, gory, and downright fun. It does a lot of things right as far as the execution of the deaths, the Rube Goldberg setups, and the grand introductory incident. But it does swerve the original formula by giving us a more contained story this time. In this film, we learn that the premonition is from many many years ago – and this ended up being an event that would ultimately save hundreds of lives, but doom them in the long run. Specifically, this is where the subtitle of “Bloodlines” comes into play – because from here we learn that Death is going after all the survivors and their families, because theoretically their families shouldn’t even exist. By the film focusing on a single family for the entirety of the film, it makes it more intimate and arguably interesting. Instead of people simply serving tropes and stereotypes, we spend a lot of time with each one of them and learn to love them all in very specific ways.
In true ‘Final Destination’ fashion, all of the deaths are fun and interesting. They are mostly done with practical effects which always gets a big thumbs up from me. The suspense is legitimate and the pain hurts to watch.
If you’ve been holding your breath for a fun new entry in the series, it’s safe to say they’ve finally delivered. ‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’ is the fun story we’ve been hoping for. Albeit, it’s ending is a bit on the weak side, but when 90% of the film sticks the landing, I can overlook some issues.
