Something Wicked This Way Comes(Review)

To have a rare out of print movie see a new life is a very fine thing indeed. Something Wicked This Way Comes was a novel penned by horror writer Ray Bradbury back in 1962, and it was adapted into film in 1983 by Disney of all things. It was locked away all but forgotten until this year. Now we can all get a ride on the way back machine to witness this timeless classic.

The plot is about a traveling carnival that arrives at small town, and two boys that discover the dark secrets within.

Right from the get go, maybe there was a tune-up or its that magic Disney used to have, but everything is so beautiful to look and it just pops. You will be pressed hard to believe this came from the 80s.

The atmosphere goes from jolly to dark at a moments notice. Even though the happenings might appear quite normal, there is this air of dread around. Then its slowly revealed something more sinister is happening at the carnival.

Now let’s talk about the villian Mr Dark. Would you believe that is Jonathan Pryce in that role, quite younger obviously. He spends most of the movie just aura farming and every scene he is in commands attention.

The story deep down is about how things come out a price, and the novel as well as the movie set an example for others to follow with its set up. The ending was unique. See one of carnival attractions is this carousel that if you ride it forward it ages you, if you ride it backwards it makes you into a kid again. So it definitely factors into the way this movie ends.

We should all be all on our hands and knees grateful this movie came to exist. Now as if we should be grateful that Disney decided to let it see the light of day again, I suppose. Give us physical release, then we will be getting somewhere. This film serves as a time capsule, very dark themes, and maybe slightly spooky to boot. I enjoyed myself thw entire time.

Perfect to watch for Halloween and it is currently streaming only on Disney+.
