I always considered Stigmata to be a companion piece to End of Days. Both movies released in 1999, they both have Gabriel Byrne, and both have religious themes.
The plot of this one sees a woman who has no religion beliefs whatsoever, and she mysterious starts displaying signs of the stigmata. A priest is sent to investigate the validity and cause of the event, and ends up having to save her soul in the process.
This movie is about holy possession of sorts, and when the woman experiences the phenomena, it is displayed in flashes. Kind of like a music video style. Speaking of music videos, there are a good bit of industrial bands that have use samples from this movie. It is really a deep dive in the power of faith. The horror aspect of it all is the pain and wounds inflicted upon the woman. Another connecting factor between this and End of Days is both movies have a fiery ending sequence.
I will say the soundtrack of the movie is pretty amazing as well. Stigmata is currently streaming on Tubi and Pluto. I recommend giving it a watch if you haven’t seen it yet.
Till next time, stay scared!
