Ticks(1993)(Review)

For some reason 90s horror had a trend of making everything giant. You had giant snakes, giant mosquitoes, giant worms, giant spiders, the list goes on. So why not have Ticks(1993) to add the growing list. No pun intended.

The story sees a group of troubled teens who go on a wilderness retreat where they face an infestation of giant mutated ticks.

One thing that immediately made me chuckle was during the opening sequence that takes place in the factory. As the camera pans around we see one of the machines is being powered by a rodent in a exercise wheel.

When we get to the ticks, things start getting messy as we see egg sacs everywhere that are pulsating and dripping with goo. The critters are always scurrying around until they latch on to their next victim. We even get to see things from the ticks’ point of view in some of the sequences. I thought that was pretty cool.

We get quite the rag tag cast of characters with a very young Seth Green, good old Clint Howard who is one of the first victims and things dont go so well for him, and also none other than Alfonso “Carlton” Ribeiro. It’s different to see him playing more of a serious role.

When we get towards the finale, it gets completely bonkers as a fire breaks out. Everyone is trying to escape as ticks are everywhere. Then we get some gross body horror when a massive tick arrives. Of course as per the normal the ending stinger shows that the threat has survived to live another day.

In all, if you enjoyed the giant creature era from the 90s, then you cant go wrong with this film. It’s fun. Very 90s. Gory as heck. The practical effects are impressive. Just a lot to like. You can find it currently streaming on Tubi if you want to check it out.
