Tremors 7: Shrieker Island(Review)

We have arrived at the final movie of the franchise(for now) known as Tremors: Shrieker Island. This one is far removed from the rest of the films.

This time around big game hunter has imported Graboids to his own private island for the ultimate hunt. Burt is called in to put a stop to it before it is too late.

As you start watching, it’s going to feel like you’re watching an entirely different movie. It’s almost like they took something they already had, added Shreikers, Michael Gross and called it a day. It’s that much of a tonal shift compared to before.

Thank gods for Richard Brake, and i guess some credit to Jon Heder as well. Brake excels at playing snarky villians and easily he is one of best things they got going here.

Burt is on this remote island, but no son. They explain he is Mexican prison. Nope, this time he is reunited with an old flame. Talk about awkward.

To make matters worse we find out the Graboids have been genetically enhanced. One of them they call the Queen is kaiju sized. The Shriekers are back, and they look all skeletal now and their shrieking can incapacitate their prey.

The hunter is way over his head but he’s focused on the hunt, so to him, everyone else is expendable. Burt has to bail him out, so he takes charge to mount an all out assault. Eventually they are able to win the day but it comes with a price. He’s not confirmed dead, but Burt is once again swallowed by a Graboid. The shot of him giving the middle finger before being swallowed encapsulated the probable end to his story. Afterwards the Graboid implodes. No Burt in sight.

It’s a solemn ending but if we all know Burt, he’s a survivor. He always comes back. We are left with a parting shot of his makeshift grave. Then the credits roll with a montage of his moments. If you make it through without getting dusty eyed, you’re much stronger than me. It’s a fitting tribute to his character, I guess in case this would be the final time his character appears. They even declare April 14th as Burt Gummer Day.

So in all,, this one is okay. I dont know how else to really feel about it. I liked the new designs of the Shreikers. It’s still CGI, but it’s better. The ending got me in my feels.

Now I do have some news to share as far as the future of the franchise. Stampede Entertainment acquired the rights back(they stepped out after part 4), and they are discussing a sequel that would take place after part 3. They want to bring Val back. Who was supposed to be the star of a TV series reboot that never came to be. Michael Gross is open to returning as long as he is able to still do it. I’m all good with that especially if this means we get original designs of Graboids and their kin.

It’s all just talks right now, so we shall see.

With that, this concludes our time with the Tremors movies. Next up, I’ll be looking at the short lived TV series.

Till next time, stay scared!
