We all been there. Traveling across the country with a companion and having a mishap happen. Maybe a flat tire. Or car breaks down. Even suffering sleep deprivation. You end up stuck in a seedy motel full of roaches and peeling wallpaper and wonder to yourself if you are going to die here?
That essentially the situation the couple faces in the film Vacancy. A married couple are traveling back home when their car breaks down. In the middle of nowhere, they resort to staying in a motel, and discover video tapes. Once it dawns on them what they are watching, they find themselves in a night where it is survival of the fittest.
So what’s interesting is how clever the antagonists are in setting everything up. You get the sense the motel owner is the prime suspect, but then there’s more involved as the movie goes on. The couple go from bickering with each other to knowing if they want to survive the night, they have to work together.
Most of the film sees the couple being toyed with by their aggressors. Most of them are wearing masks though I called it on the identity of one of them. The wife goes all final girl at the end as she protects her injured husband.
In all, this film is a scary even more so in this day and age as the events portrayed within is something that can happen in reality. Definitely a film worth checking out and I completely forgot it has a sequel which I may have to check into.
Till next time, stay scared!
