It’s easy to dismiss the latest brain child of Jane Schoenbrun especially if like me you felt entirely disappointed in her debut We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. I can say I Saw The TV Glow is a step in the right direction. Yeah it’s very weird. Let’s get weird with it.
The story sees our protagonist Owen who becomes obsessed with the tv show The Pink Opaque. But when the lines of his reality begin to blur he struggles more with finding a place where he fits in.
Yeah think of this as a queer surrealistic horror. If you understand the context of the movie then you will truly understand the horror of it. This movie goes deep.
There’s plenty of creepy effects. Have you ever seen a movie or TV show and when you revisit it years later, it’s not as you remembered it? That’s pertains to what happens in the movie.
Okay might seem controversial but this movie had a Lynchian feel about it. Yes there is a trans element and i won’t spoil how that plays into it but once you understand the message of the movie it will completely blow your mind.
And then we get to the ending. It’s very sad. It’s hard to remain stuck as someone you don’t want to be. When the screaming started happening out of nowhere yeah that was shocking.
It has been said this movie is destined to be a cult classic. I will agree. Because this movie will definitely be a hit with those who feel they don’t belong. I don’t understand the hate unless it is bigots or people who didn’t understand the message. Even though nothing that scary seems to happens in this movie, it is not boring. There’s a lot of moving parts. You get to know Owen and maybe relate to him. And hey this movie contains Fred Durst playing the father. Yes that Fred Durst.
And for a young and relatively new actor, Justice Smith smashed his role in this film showing a range of emotion when necessary.
Yeah I ending up enjoying it. I wasn’t expecting much but yeah it’s actually good. If you want to see it for yourself, it is currently streaming on Max. Just be warned it gets heavy.
