Could the supernatural be explained away with logic and reason? Is demonic possession simply a mental disorder? That is what the Exorcism of Emily Rose explores in great detail.
The film is about a priest who is charged in the negligent death of a woman he performed an exorcism on. A lawyer must prove his Innocence, though that may prove to be difficult to prove to everyone looking at a scientific reason for her death.
The movie plays out as a courtroom procedure, with flashbacks to show us the experiences that happen to Emily. It is clear the way it is told she is suffering from a demonic possession. And those forces do not want the truth to get out. The body contortions she goes through are unsettling, but not too many scares. It ends on a solemn note that even though everyone had good intentions, there had to be someone to punish for her death. A matyr if you will.
Not the most thrilling possession movie, but if you like courtroom dramas with a mix of horror, you should enjoy this one. It is currently streaming on HBOMAX if you want to check it out.
Till next time, stay scared!
