Black Christmas(1974)(Happy Horrordays#29)(Review)

Its the week of Christmas so why not look at one of best holiday slashers, the original Black Christmas from 1974. It’s definitely full of cheer with a side of murder.

The plot is about a sorority who find themselves the target for disturbing phone calls followed by each of them disappearing only to turn up dead later. They must figure out a way to stop the killer before its too late.

Right away, we get the POV of the killer which I appreciated the most about this film.
We arent told why and what caused him to do this other than being obviously deranged. The phone calls are disturbing, very obscene, with whoever it is able to change their voice.

There is a subplot with one of the sister’s being pregnant, and she wants to get rid of the baby while her boyfriend aggressively tries to get her to keep it. There’s a red herring that’s clever where you would think he is the culprit.

We get John Saxon starring as a detective, and hes on the case to track the killer down. It all leads to a final confrontation and a very ambiguous ending.

This is a classic, and it’s easy to see why. The set up, the kills, and it would go on to inspire future holiday slashers as well as receive multiple remakes. You can catch it streaming on Tubi which I highly recommend.
