Black Phone 2(Review)

cott Derickson took an entirely different approach to his sequel to Black Phone by marrying it with Sinister then adding influences from Nightmare on Elm Street on top of that. Black Phone 2 definitely outdoes the first film.

The plot sees The Grabber return from beyond the grave 4 years later to further torment Finney and his sister. The sister has horrible visions that leads to a discovery of how connected they are to The Grabber.

When it comes to the visions they have the same grainy look like the filming sequences in Sinister, even containing creepy ambient music as well. There is more of a gore content, and some sequences are pretty frightening to say the least.

When The Grabber shows up, he takes his queues from Freddy, even has a burnt face and able to influence the dream world. We see how that affects things in the real world, something familiar from Nightmare on Elm Street. There a scene where he causes someone to spin rapidly as blood sprays everywhere. That was a neat effect.

We eventually dive into the past behind The Grabber which connects more to the siblings, giving us an idea of where he came from. The sister eventually find a way to use her powers to turn the tables against The Grabber to take the battle to him.

I really liked this one, i felt it surpassed the sequel, and if there’s one thing the director does really well it’s providing atmospheric horror. It is currently playing in select cinemas and should pop up on Peacock in early 2026.
