So far, it’s been a good experiment with taking the Universal Monsters and giving them a fresh coat of paint. Especially the ones other than just Dracula. Lee Cronin decided to give us a reinvention of The Mummy, and this is far different than any Mummy film we seen before. He revealed it is connected to the Evil Dead universe, and I’ll say this film definitely shows that.
The film is about a family whose daughter gets kidnapped and goes missing for 8 years. She is finally found again however she returns different. As the family tries to figure out what happened to their daughter, they find themselves beset by an evil force that seeks to destroy them from within.
It takes it time seeping in just how vicious this film is going to get. There’s some very gross things that happen with body fluids spewing out everywhere. This includes a nail clipping scene that will really having you wincing. Very much some body horror going on.
We do get some lore dump that explains what happened to their daughter and that comes towards the end of the movie. By that point all hell has literally broken loose. The film has a very chaotic scene that takes place during a wake. Yeah definitely feels like Evil Dead with what could be Deadites being set loose.
When we get to the ending, we see the lengths the family will have to go to save their daughter. A sacrifice has to be made for the greater good. My only complaint is they could have left it at that but they ended up dragging things out a bit in a way that was unnecessary.
Here I was not expecting much only to find myself really enjoying everything about the movie. Very dark, very creepy at points. It was disgusting too. Just all the bits horror fans would love. It’s currently playing in select threaters if you decide to check it out. Which I will highly recommend.
