Scanners(Review)[Twisted Throwback Thursday]

Anytime you mention Scanners, the one thing people will talk about is the famous head exploding scene. That is what the movie is known for the most and it makes for a proper introduction to the rest of the film.

This is a Cronenberg film about people with telepathic abilities known as Scanners and one of them is enlisted to help track down the most deadliest Scanner of all.

So you have to forgive if you will mistake the main character known as Cameron Vale for a robot. The actor who plays him is mechanical in his line delivery and how he portrays the role. Maybe this was a something done on purpose, but he shows no emotion at all.

It is also humorous when the Scanners use their abilities as it involves a lot of wide eye staring, head shaking, lips unfurling, and exaggerated movements. I’m sure it is meant to show the audiences when the Scanners are using their powers, but it comes off as silly at times.

But who really makes this film what it is would be Michael Ironside. He plays the villainous Scanner, and anytime he is on screen, you know things are about to go down. It leads to a very disturbing and gruesome ending.

In all, this was a good film, it had some pacing issues, but definitely would say there are better Cronenberg films than this. Scanners is currently streaming on HBOMAX so if you have yet to check into it, it wouldn’t hurt to do so.

Till next time, stay scared!
