Okay guys….you’re going to hate this. But what if Skinamarink is actually better than we are saying it is. Keep your swords at bay and I explore my theory here in a bit.
The plot sees two kids who wake up one day to see their father has disappeared along with all the windows in their house. It becomes clear something is watching them within the darkness of their home.
So everything is filmed in skewed angles. Sometimes focused on the ceiling or the wall. I jokingly called this Watching Paint Dry the Movie. Because that’s what it feels like. But there are dark areas around that we are supposed to focus on. Trying to see if something is there. Try as I might I never saw anything I could make out. But that doesn’t mean something was not there. The movie is filmed in a way to make us feel unsettled especially with the crazy camera angles.
Now yes this movie is without a plot, and I was confused with everyone else what this movie was actually saying. Some things to note..this is entirely found footage. And hardly any dialogue except occasional whispers from the kid and the entity that is terrorizing them. But I think what the director wanted to do was allow us to form our own explanation behind the happenings in the movie. That is why this film is so experimental and it made a bold move. Based on it’s performance at the box office it succeeded in that. It’s now up to the rest of us to get on board.
It got me thinking this movie became a viral sensation. There had to be something about it to get people. What is it that I am not getting. So I really thought about it, did some sleuthing and found lots of fan theories of the film. Because it’s get people curious to put the pieces together to form what they feel is the whole picture.
That’s why I am saying maybe we need to give Skinamarink more credit than we have. Yes we may not get it. But the movie empowers to try to get it. Form our own theories. Probably not for awhile, but I plan to rewatch it because I’m sure I will see details I may have missed during my initial viewing.
This film is currently streaming on Shudder if you decide to check it out. Which if you do, I plead from making any hasty harsh judgements. Yeah its going to seem stupid and nonsensical..but think further. Just give it a chance.
