I’m sure we are all familiar with how Advent Calendars work, where you get a surprise each day starting in December leading up to Christmas Day. The movie gives a different twist on the concept where the results of interacting with the Advent Calendar can be deadly.
The plot is about a woman who was paralyzed from the waist down due to a car accident who one day receives an antique Advent Calendar that has specific rules. As she opens up each door, some of the gifts are pleasant, while others demand sacrifices. She is forced to complete the calendar or die.
The film can be unsettling at times with the dangerous things the calendar causes to happen. Even though it is in French, with the help of subtitles, we can still understand what it is happening. One thing that is clear is the calendar is tailored to the users need. It will grant whatever the person asks for, but not without a catch. That is where the sacrifices come in, as if the entity within the calendar is testing the resolve of who ever is using it. Saying to them, okay, just exactly how far are you willing to go to recieve the gift I am giving to you. The people resign themselves because it is not like they have a choice as it is either they play by the rules or die. The ending really calls into question the purpose behind this when it is revealed what happens when the last door is opened.
The movie is definitely different with dark themes and plenty of gore. There will be times where it cuts away before something bad happens, and you will be glad it did. Currently streaming on Shudder, I will recommend checking it out if you want to see something new during the holidays. If you already seen The Advent Calendar, feel free to leave your thoughts below!
