I think there is a good reason why Cronenberg films do not get a sequel, and The Fly II is a demonstration as to why. I am here to give you my thoughts on this film.
The plot sees the son of the doomed Seth Brundle named Martin who inherited the same mutation and is trying to have a normal life but learns his father’s legacy is not easily escaped.
So as thrilling and grotesque as the original was, the sequel is almost boring. Things happen but it takes an hour before the icky moments begin. Before that, we see such things as Martin trying to figure out the bugs in his father’s teleportation pods and starting a romance. Oh and fellow scientists and staff are complete assholes, and they all deserve to die. Another detracting factor is something happens to a dog, so if you don’t like seeing dogs hurt or killed, then you may want to skip this one.
When the mutation sets in, it ends up being a completely different metamorphosis than what his father went through. There are still body horror moments involved but not as disgusting as the first film. The new Fly design was pretty monstrous I have to say. In the end, Martin succeeds where his father failed, but it comes with a price.
So Fly II was okay I guess. Maybe a bit unnecessary of a sequel, but it had some redeeming moments about it. It is currently streaming on HBOMAX if you decide to give it a chance.
Till next time, stay scared!
