We all know of the Grinch and the holiday horror The Mean One reimagines him as a killer monster. Played by David Howard Thorton with maniacally glee, we watch as the green menace slaughters everyone in sight.
The story sees the story of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas reimagined as a horror tale. The crucial parts remain the same except it’s not Whoville, it’s Newville. They can’t call him The Grinch, but he still hates Christmas to the point he will kill anyone who attempts to celebrate the holiday. And Cindy as we know as the one who encounters him is the only one who can ends up trying to put a stop to him.
With a pretty nasty mean streak, we watch as The Mean One kills characters in holiday themed ways. There’s an extended sequence where he dispatches a group of Santa’s. It was a nice touch where they almost call him by name but someone shouts the name “Finch” instead.
Cindy who encountered the monster before when she was little spends most of the movie convincing everyone that the menace has returned. And she uncovers a conspiracy of how Newville attempts to keep the Mean One at bay. There’s even a fun training montage as she gets ready for the final battle.
There’s pretty healthy amounts of gore with plenty of Easter eggs referencing the original tale. The ending will see Cindy face the creature only to see it dispatched in an unique way.
This is one of the first classic characters that got the horror treatment before it became the next best thing. It’s independently made, so the acting might seem hanmy at times, but otherwise it’s not too bad. If you want a holiday themed horror movie to watch, it won’t hurt to check this one out.
The Mean One is currently avaliable on Stars or you can rent in via Amazon Prime or VUDU.
