The latest Adams Family feature from Wonder Wheel Productions known as Mother of Flies is their most rawest experience yet as it gives us an intimate look at necromancy and dark ritual magic. This is not for the faint of heart.
The plot is about a father and a daughter who seek a cure for cancer, but realize the price may be too high to pay.
As the film begins. right away we are brought into the realm of death with animal carcasses and flies buzzing about. It slowly builds, and you just feel the dread as you know things are about to go sideways.
Things do go sideways indeed as we dive deeper, learning more about the witch and why she is there. The father is very skeptical of everything even when he experiences some strangeness himself. But his daughter is willing to see this through.
The ending bits are very goretastic and gruesome. We get an unexpected reveal, and even a happy yet morbid ending. You will have to watch it for yourself.
Going into this, I felt it was taking what they introduced in Hellbender and turning up the volume. I was pleased to find out I was right. Every film they have contains magic in its lifeblood, and this one is no different. The family provides their own soundtrack as always, and the atmosphere practically chills the bones at times as the wind literally howls at you.
But what really made this stand out is how the Adams said it explores their own battles against cancer. This film is a bit mean, and it wont hold back on its exploration of faith. I appreciated how it pays attention to details when it comes to the different rituals performed. You won’t get a film like this that has the balls to really explores necromancy like this one does.
In all, if you enjoy folk horror films, then I cant recommend this one enough. You can find it currently streaming on Shudder.
