The Quarry(Review)[Terrifying Theatrical Tuesday]

From SuperMassive Games who created interactive horror games such as Until Dawn and the Dark Pictures Anthology comes their next entry known as The Quarry. Boasting a stellar cast and a story full of twists, it is easy to see why horror fans would eat this up.

The plot is about a group of camp counselors who end up having to survive their final night at a camp located in Hackett’s Quarry. There is a definite double entredre being implied with quarry also meaning a person who is being pursued. Though I will say the unofficial tagline of the game is what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

This game is guided by the choices you make, and each choice can permanently change a character’s fate. Something as simple as choosing whether to pick up a bag can lead to disaster later on in the story. You get the chance to explore where you can find different collectibles. You can also find Tarot Cards, and between chapters, you can get them read and choose a card to witness a characters future fate. This gives you a chance to anticipate what might happen and possibly change it so things go better. The game take inspiration from 80s horror movies, especially with the camp setting, so there’s great nostalgic value all around.

This game boasts an amazing cast full of horror legends such as David Arquette, Ted Raimi, Lin Shaye, and Lance Henriksen. The story is engrossing and depending how it goes in your playthrough it will have gory kills. At times, it is like you are watching an actual movie as the graphics are that realistic. One of the strengths of SuperMassive is with their character models. They look exactly like the actors who are playing them and it’s hard to not be impressed. There are different endings you can get depending on how you play. I got the bad ending with three people killed in my party. To give you extra incentive to play again, you unlock a Death Rewind mode which gives you three chances to save a character from dying.

You also can acquire other modes such as a horror movie filter that gives you different filters to apply such as black and white, 80s horror movie or indie horror. There is also 80s horror movie costumes, and a gore mode if you feel it is worth it.

The Quarry is available on PS4, PS5, XBox One, XBox Series X and S, and Windows. As a horror fan, I enjoyed this game immensely and cannot wait to dive in for another playthrough. I highly recommend it especially for those who enjoyed Until Dawn. If you already played The Quarry, feel free to leave your thoughts below!

Till next time, stay scared!
