Trap(2024)(Review)

For those who followed M Night Shymalan’s career between hits and misses, we been waiting for the moment he would strike oil again. His latest film Trap(2024) is that moment. It feels like a return to form for him. It’s that good.

The plot sees a father who brings his daughter to a concert. It ends up being a front to Iure out and capture a serial killer named The Butcher and the film details the events as they occur.

Right away we get clues that The Butcher is in attendance and the identity of who it is. Then we become invested as to how they will get out without being caught. As it turns out the killer is playing expert level chess while everyone else is trying to anticipate his every move.

It’s the daughter who points out that something seems off. Confirmation is received once they return home and things really start to spiral out of control. Will the killer ultimately end up caught or will they survive? You will have to see the intense ending to find out. The twists just keep on coming and even though the ultimate twist was weak in my opinion, it doesn’t take away from how amazing this film is.

Josh Harnett does so well with his character going from cold and calculating to putting on a false smile and acting chipper. Of course M Night has a cameo but it’s not too distracting. I was engaged the entire time waiting to see what the killer would do next. It definitely leaves things open for a potential sequel.

The movie is currently streaming on Max and I highly recommend checking it out. It’s fun and in my opinion it is one of M Night’s best films that we seen in a long time.
