It’s the 35th Anniversary of Tremors. This is my favorite franchise and yeah it really went downhill with quality but the films had their own special charm. Even if the CGI department turned everything into shit, the stories at least made sense. Kinda. I’ll digress.
Let’s take a journey. Each week I’ll feature every movie from the Tremors franchise. I’ll even might include the TV Show, do you dare me to? I’ll do it. We are going to be going places. Let’s have fun.
Let’s kick things off with the OG. Tremors that released in 1990 was a mixed bag of horror comedy. It was full of moments of whimsy and moments that were like gotcha.
It’s easy to see why this one is a favorite amongst horror fans, me included.
We are introduced to Perfection, Nevada. Not much to look at, but two unlikely heroes Earl and Valentine are looking to move onto greener pastures but find their plans detailed when they discover subterranean threats are besieging the small town. It may not be much but to them it’s home.
A brilliant move this film makes is not revealing the threat all the way. At first all we see in these snake creatures that emerge from the ground and everyone think that is it. But then we meet our first Graboid. A giant worm like creature that have the snake like things end up being their tongue. They have no eyes so they hunt by vibration. Affectionately known as Graboids because they will grab their victims and swallow them hole.
This is also our first introduction to our favorite gun nut Burt Gummer. He would go on to become the only reoccurring character who starred in every movie of the series. Sometimes other characters would pop up in later entries but he was the oil that kept this crazy machine going. He was like the Ash Williams of the series where he was badass and cool.
We get a cute romance between Valentine’ and geologist named Rhonda. Oh and Reba McIntyre guest stars as Burt’s wife. We get a small group of survivor we get to know as they band together to avoid the worms.
But Graboids have this super intelligence. Once they find food, they will patiently wait it out. Or they will dig underneath vehicles essentially trapping the people inside. They even can play possum or set traps.
The small group of survivors end up taking out the worms by tricking them into eating dynamite. They also discover that rocks are not the Graboids best friend. And when the Graboids explode it is very messy.
Finally only one Graboid is left. Our guy Stumpy. He’s not falling for the tricks but there’s one stupid idea left that turns out to work perfectly.
For now, the threat is contained. But we all know the Graboids will return another day.
There’s so much about this movie as to why it still holds up today. I mean more than just the star power of Kevin Bacon. It has heart. It’s scary but not too scary. There’s nothing us like it. It’s just freaking fantastic.
Stay tuned next week for part 2!!
Till next time, stay scared!
