Beyond The Black Rainbow(Review)[Terrifying Theatrical Tuesday]

From the director responsible for Mandy, his debut Beyond The Black Rainbow is the very definition of psychedelic horror. It is something that will unnerve you visually and most likely will not leave your mind after watching.

The movie is about a research facility called the Arboria Institute that houses a girl with psychic abilities. All she wants is to be reunited with her family, so she seeks to escape from the facility and the cruel man who oversees her.

Right away, this movie will give you the experience of being on an extreme acid trip. But there is a purpose behind it as the character we are mostly following by the name of Barry Nyle is under the influence of powerful hallucinogenic drugs. It is mostly likely to be able to effectively handle the mental strain of communicating with the girl, except the result has made him completely unhinged. As you witness the different sessions he conducts with the girl, you ascertain that he enjoys toying with her as well as experiencing perverse pleasure during their interactions. He oozes creepiness from every pore and you start to worry of his intentions. There is a scene that confirms exactly what he is after, and he will go to any length to achieve that.

This is a film that will make you feel uneasy with use of audiovisual effects. As we get to know Barry more, we understand he believes himself to be not human, and later on, he transforms himself to show that. As a whole, I think my only complaint about the whole thing is the ending. I was hoping it would lead to a big showdown of mental proportions between Barry and the girl, but instead he was easily dispatched.

This is movie designed to invade your mind, and once inside, it does not leave quietly. It is sort of horrifying and trippy experience, and for those who enjoyed his other film Mandy, you should enjoy seeing the director’s humble beginnings. It is currently streaming on HBOMAX if you have yet to see it. If you already seen Beyond The Black Rainbow, feel free to leave your thoughts below!!
