Destroy All Neighbors(Review)

Just from the title and the trailer, I knew Destroy All Neighbors would be a treat, and it absolutely was. Every now and then, you will find a modern release that capsulates the zany horror from the 80s and this is definitely one of them.

The plot is about a struggling musician attempting to compose his perfect progressive rock song. One day a neighbor moves in, causing a ruckus and distracting the man from his work. He goes to confront the neighbor and an incident occurs leading to the accidental death of neighbor. The man finds himself in a situation where the body count rises as he still attempts to complete his song.

So we first get a nifty animated title screen which is fun to see. Definitely harkens back to the 80s with that. Let’s also discuss the makeup effects in this movie which are absolutely amazing. Alex Winter who started in Bill and Ted and The Lost Boys is unrecognizable in the role of the neighbor named Vlad. Gore and other bodily fluids flow throughout the movie.

It’s hard to discern if the main character is just seeing things or if other people can see them too. They certainly interact in a way like things that aren’t there are actually there. So even if the main guy comes across as completely insane, he might not be as insane as everyone thinks. Should I mention the main character is portrayed by Jonah from Mystery Science Theatre 3000? When I checked his acting credits, he’s been in a good bit of other horror movies as well, so this guy has a pedigree that lends to his performance here.

Horror based on music usually is of the metal variety so it was interesting to see one based on progressive rock and the topic is how most people don’t understand it or just not into it. So no one understands his passion which plays into this movie.

It all leads to a final battle and seeing if there is a pleasant end to his experience which you have to see for yourself.

I absolutely enjoyed this film, it was funny, told a good story, and it’s just spectacular to watch. I highly recommend checking this one out and it’s a Shudder Original.
