There are times when people go searching for answers, but what they find instead turns their life into a complete nightmare. That is what will happen in Project MKHEXE. It’s the lastest found footage gem with shades of psychological and cosmic horror.
The story is about two brothers Sean and Tim. Tim is trying to make sense of his brother’s sudden suicide so he starts a documentary to find answers. His brother was obsessed with something called Project MKHEXE and every clue he turns up leads him further and further into a pit of madness.
We start out by learning about Sean then subsequently him finding out about Project MKHEXE. At first it seems as simple as just a secret government project, allegedly run by Nazis. But as it goes on, there is a lot more to it than that.
The issue they run into is whoever or whatever is responsible doesn’t want people to know anything about it. Websites disappear in a matter of minutes. Voicemails. All that Tim has to rely on is his brothers research and his friends. His parents of no help, it’s questionable if Sean’s death broke them or if it is the influence of whatever it is behind the phenomenon but he finds himself at odds with them.
When you go looking for something, it can find you instead, and that is the predicament Tim finds himself in. We eventually discover the true nature of the project, and this is where the cosmic horror element is involved. The rest of the movie is a descent into madness and murder. The movie ends in a very nutty way.
I found this very engrossing. There are a bunch of flashing sequences and you do get a heads up if that is an issue. When the movie started getting more of a Lovecraftian vibe, that’s when it really got interesting. It definitely makes use of its entire runtime, and there might be some unnecessary padding, but otherwise I enjoyed it. It goes off the rails in the best way. I highly recommend it and it’s currently streaming on Screambox.
