Rent A Pal(Review)[Terrifying Theatrical Tuesday]

The film known as Rent A Pal starts with an undeniable menacing tone and keep ramping it up until everything explodes.

The plot is set in 1990 and is about a lonely bachelor named David who has resorted to video dating services to no avail. He gets no respect and kicked like a wounded dog, including by his own mother who he is in charge of taking care of. He happens upon a strange video tape called Rent A Pal, and meets the enigmatic man Andy. His world unravels the more he interacts with the man and David is soon swept into a storm he cannot contain.
The video tape segments with Andy get weird where it seems he is playing off of David’s vulnerability. It’s hard to say if the Andy is somehow influencing the tapes or if this is something all in David’s head. He definitely becomes the unreliable protagonist.

In a way, he helps David become more confident and he actually lands a date. However David becomes obsessed and reliant on Andy and Andy uses that to force David make some not great decisions. As you can imagine, this doesn’t end for anyone and the ending is a bit jarring to say the least.

There are those friendships born out of how people can serve each other and doing anything to be accepted. This film has creepy elements with the psychological horror aspect, and makes for an engrossing watch. Currently streaming on Hulu, definitely recommend giving it a watch.
