There are reasons why I am glad I go into movies blind, one of those being not having outside influences that would prevent me from forming my own opinion. I’m glad I did with the new Scream movie as it ended up blowing me away. There had been positive buzz going around about the film, and it deserves every bit of it.
We return to Woodsboro after 25 years with a new Ghostface killer on the loose. It is up to a new group of teens along with some returning characters to figure out how to stop the killer once again.
So we are given a reboot and also a sequel, or as the movie calls it, a requel. The new Scream still continue the trend of commenting on itself as well as the horror franchise as a whole. There are scenes that are call backs to the very first Scream film, but it doesn’t overdo them. One thing to note is the new Ghostface is very brutal and deadly compared to the past. The opening scenes are enough to make you wince in terror. They make you fear Ghostface again, and for that, I give them props. As far as the kills go, there are a few surprise deaths you will not expect. It is film’s way of telling you anyone is expendable.
I was pleasantly surprised just how good this movie was, and it was enough to make me a fan of the franchise again. It was a loving tribute to what Wes Craven set out to do in the first movie, and they even named a character after him to hone in that point. Now, not saying the movie is absolutely perfect as the killer reveal in the end was a bit disappointing. Not more so who the killer was, but mostly their motivations as to why they were killing. Maybe that was done on purpose, but just something I found pretty dumb. But it is just a minor complaint on my part. Other that, I loved the movie, and I hope they just let the franchise end here. Let it die a dignified death and not beat a dead horse and rob it of everything it stood for.
Scream(2022) is still showing in theaters, and it is highly recommended you go see it. Heck, I wasn’t even going to check it out during the theatrical run, but decided to take a chance on it. I’m glad I did, and you will be too. If you have already seen it, feel free to leave your thoughts below!
Till next time, stay scared!!
