Russell Crowe is again kinda sorta portraying a saintly priest in The Exorcism
not to be confused with The Pope’s Exorcist. Except this time around he is battling demons such as alcoholism. But what if it’s something more?
The plot sees a struggling actor who lands a movie role but also has demons from his past that he is recovering from. The actor starts to behave in peculiar ways and his daughter suspects he gave into his addictions again but soon learns there are more sinister forces at play.
This film definitely relies on its jumpscares. I can’t say they didn’t get me, but I’m sorry when Russell Crowe just appears out of nowhere, that can be a bit terrifying. And yeah that happens. He will burst in the room and bam.
The heart of the story is a woman who will not give up on her father. Even when he goes all Evil Dead on her, she still believes in him. Talk about literally going to hell and back for her father. The ending will see her battling for his soul.
It’s pretty much a carbon copy of what we seen before in exorcism films. Even with twisty body horror. That was also alarming seeing Russell Crowe just start twisting and then his head is hanging back. Gross.
And we already seen the addict ends up possessed by demons storyline. It’s a fun ride. But it won’t add much more to the conversation.
The film is currently streaming on Shudder if you want to give it a whirl.
