Released in 2015 amidst the found footage craze, The Gallows is your standard supernatural film presented as a found footage film. It gives the film an interesting wrinkle even though it’s not too derivative from the normal supernatural/slasher affair.
The plot is set 20 years later after a freak accident during the debut performance of a theater play called “The Gallows” where a person was hung to death. A group of students make the unwise decision to revive the play and 4 of them end up trapped in a school and targeted by a vengeful spirit from the past.
Being that it is presented as found footage, the film relies on visual trickery and audio cues to present it scares. You will notice little things such as shadows or hear the creaking of a rope swinging. That aspect added a little invention as we watch the four being toyed with and eventually picked off one by one. One of the coolest visuals of the movie is there is a female victim that starts to experience rope burns. She lifts her neck so you can see it as you notice a figure appear behind her holding a rope. Suddenly the rope appears around her neck and then you see her forcefully dragged back.
I thought the film was okay as there are better found footage films out there. It keeps your attention all the way to the head-scratching ending. It is currently streaming on HBOMAX if you want to check it out, and of course, it did get a sequel known as The Gallows Act 2. Till next time, stay scared!
