Horror that has themes of grief are their own animal. Sometimes it makes a scary situation feel just as raw, just as real. Sometimes in grief, the worst monsters come from within. The Woman in the Yard is in an example of that.
The plot sees a family dealing with the loss of a husband and father, and one day a mysterious woman appears in their front yard. They must figure out why the woman is there and defend themselves against an unrelenting threat.
Part of grief is feelings of guilt, and basically everything that is occurring could just be a manifestation of that. The son is always antagonizing the mom. The mom is complete disarray. So when the woman makes her appearance, it just adds to the tension that is already there.
This movie clicks along, secrets are revealed, and there are moments where atmosphere definitely adds to the fear of the unknown. And it could have been great.
The ending is what deflated the tires, I reallly despise these type of endings. My best guess and its normal with grief, that a person can end up in their own hell. Just after everything was said and done, the way the movie ended was disappointing.
Its still worth checking it out, I liked it enough until the ending. Its also a noir horror, so if you like Jordan Peele’s works, you will like this. It is currently steaming on Peacock if you want to give ir a go.
