Every once and awhile you find horror movies that use different mediums to elicit fear. Undertone is one of those where its not what is seen, it’s what you hear that will be so unnerving.
The plot sees a woman who is caring for her dying mother, and she also has a podcast where she debunks cases of paranormal activity. One day, an mysterious email is received containing a series of audio files. The more she listens, she experiences supernatural events that blurs the lines between the real and the unreal.
Very small cast as we only see her and her mother onscreen for the most part. The rest all we hear is their voices. She enjoys playing the Scully to her podcast partner’s Mulder. The banter between them as they investigate the mystery is very natural. Everything is played straight.
This movie uses sound design to great effect. It’s very chilling at times. There’s a sequence that plays out involving nursery rhymes that if you play them backwards contain hidden messages. It gets damn creepy, and it will even challenge the audience to listen closely.
Her mother is invalid, and doesn’t speak, so the daughter asks an interesting question if the mother can still hear her. The answer is unknown but keep this in mind as the movie goes on. Also there’s things being moved around the house as well as unexplainable sounds.
As we near the end of the movie, there are segments where all you see is a black screen, and your just hearing whatever is happening. As to what is happening, it something very evil that ends up being summoned as a result of listening to all the files. The ending is where things get absolutely nerve-racking.
In all, I felt this movie delivered as far as being scary, and bringing in a bit of realism. Audiophiles will really enjoy it. If you enjoy lore especially those regarding nursery rhymes, this will scratch that itch as well. Just my only caution is if you ever taken care of a dying parent, or if you are a mother, this might hit a sore spot so just keep that in mind.
I will highly recommend it for horror fans, and it is currently playing in most theaters.
