Full disclosure I am a big fan of the video game, so I was nervous about the movie adaptation. As it turns out, once I let it cook it ended up being a pretty great experience. Not as bad as I was expecting.
The plot is loosely based on the game where a group of friends go to a cabin to find a lost sister. However death waits for them instead, and they must relive events until they figure out how to survive until dawn.
So I was like group is different but there ends up being an explanation for it. The made the rewind feature from the game as a plot device in the movie. It was like demented Groundhog Day.
Most of deaths were goretastic with a slasher element to it. Until the scene comes were people just explode out of nowhere into chunks of viscera. That brought shock and a smile on my face.
They kept the Wendigos, and our buddy Dr Hill serves as the human component as a villian. They brought Peter Stormaee back to fulfill the role in the flesh which ended up being fantastic.
Does everyone get to survive? You will have to watch to find out.
There are Easter Eggs littered throughout relating to the game, and I would say this was better than I thought. Most of what I enjoyed in the game was there. The kills were messy. It’s above average as far as horror films go, even if you know nothing of the video game. Recommend checking this film out, it’s currently streaming on Netflix. Play the video game if you own a PS5.
