Vicious(2025) - Gruesome Gazette

What is with horror movies that feature old people, and making them so darn creepy. With both the look and the aura. Vicious(2025) definitely was very much what it says on the tin and absolutely will rub your nerves raw.

The plot sees a young woman who receives a strange visitor one evening. They leave her with a mysterious box saying she will die unless she can give it what it wants. She must decide on what she is willing to give in order to survive the evening.

Where this movie presents most is atmosphere, and make you look at the surroundings of the character. Oh yeah, the jumpscares are no joke, even if you can see them coming. The dread is really on display.

The worst aspect of dealing with a supernatural threat is not even be able to tell anyone about it. This movie says there’s no help, and it enforced that. Now the entity is helpful enough to provide clues but also is very enigmatic on it can help or not.

Just when you think it cant get any worse, that’s when the gardening shears come into play. That also happens twice and they don’t cut away a single bit. I was closing my eyes, and as I heard the sounds, I was still wincing and curling up in a ball. Then comes the ending, and yeah that seemed like the end was never going to come. It just goes on. Until it finally does end, but it’s shown that the threat is not actually over.

It’s a damn pity this movie only got exclusively released on a streaming service. It’s very effective as a horror movie, and deserves to be more accessible. I believe by now it is available as VOD, but currently it is only streaming on Paramount+. If you can watch it, I cant recommend it enough. Afterwards, you might find yourself afraid to turn the lights off, and I appreciate when modern horror still makes the effort into actually making the audience feel fear.
