An American Haunting(Review)

Here we have a movie about a haunting. Not just any regular haunting, specifically its An American Haunting. It’s based on the legend of the Bell Witch, and is supposed to be a spooky affair.

The story which goes from modern time to a bulk of it in flashbacks is about a 19th century family who find themselves cursed and their teenage daughter is targeted by a malevolent spirit as a result. They must figure out how to break the curse so they can save their daughter.

Let’s start with how the spirit torments their daughter. I couldn’t believe my eyes when we see her yanked by her hair, and then trying to not laugh as basically the girl is slapped around like she is in a Looney Tunes cartoon. With similar sound effects. They do this multiple times. It came off as more silly than scary.

There are some spooky moments that happened. There are times this movie fakes you out as it shows you something only to reveal it was only a dream. Donald Sutherland plays the father, and you just feel something is up with him. Sissy Spacek plays opposite as the mother, and both helped carry the movie.

They try multiple times to exorcise the spirit to no avail. Then its revealed the real cause of why it manifested itself. That was quite a note for the movie to end on.

In all, this wasnt a bad supernatural horror, but it wasn’t the greatest either. I found much better movies based on the Bell Witch that are out there. This one just really went in an odd direction. It’s currently streaming on Amazon Prime if you want to take a peek.

Till next time, stay scared!
