The Other(Review)

Shudder has been the source of hidden gems, some already well known while others they leave for people to find out for themselves. The Other falls in the latter category. Buckle up, you are in for a nightmare ride.

The story is about a couple who adopt a child who is mute. Strange happenings occur and they find out the child harbors some dark secrets.

The film wastes no time in giving the heebie jeebies. Literal goosebumps as the its ramps up the dread and terror that is felt. There’s definitely points it gets downright creepy. At the same time, you become invested as you try to figure out exactly where its all going.

One example is when a girl Fiona comes along. She has down syndrome but also taking from a Stephen King trope she has special abilities. She knows exactly whats going on. Yeah every time shes on screen, its very disturbing.

There’s other strange things occurring. With the couple, the woman ends up getting pregnant. Now the circumstances that caused it, it’s pretty much known its not going to turn out well. It doesnt.

With the little girl, she never speaks, but its clear shes been through hell. She also knows a bit of whats going on based on a very dark past. We do eventually get an explanation as to what is going on. It contains a scene that will definitely have you going what in heck am I watching. That was a reaction I had at least. The ending was definitely something.

Yeah, I went into this blind, and I can say I felt unnerved most of the time. It will pull you in and keep your attention as you try to figure out exactly what is going on. Maybe make you even afraid to turn off the lights afterwards. It’s just damn creepy. Its rare for a movie to make me feel uneasy, so that says a lot. If you want to brave the journey, it’s currently streaming on Shudder.
