There are those movies that try something different in the zombie department, and one of those movies that is sadly underrated and not well known is Pontypool.
The story sees a shock jock named Mazzy who ends up in the center of an outbreak that turns people violent and cannibalistic and the infection is caused by the English language. As one of the taglines mentions, it’s either shut up or die.
This movie is so fun and lovers of language will have such a time dissecting this movie. Everything we initially find out comes from eyewitness reports that Mazzy fields on live radio. Until the infection takes hold in the radio station where we see the full effects.
It turns out Mazzy who has the gift of gab finds the solution to the problem but it becomes a challenge in being able to cure the infection. The ending is a bit of a bummer but we do get a fun little post credits scene to make up for it.
I think because it just added something different to the zombie genre and it is an intelligent movie, that’s why this movie is so great to me. It’s very popular within literary circles with how it treats the idea of language being an infection source. It’s totally random in the way it infects someone too. Just this movie is so brilliant and if you haven’t known of it yet, do yourself a favor and check out Pontypool for yourself. It’s currently streaming on Shudder.
Till next time, stay scared!
